About this tool
The ToolNinja Aspect Ratio Calculator does the two things people actually need an aspect ratio tool for: simplify a width and height into a clean ratio (1920×1080 becomes 16:9), and solve for a missing dimension when you know a target ratio and only one side (a 16:9 video that needs to be exactly 800px wide needs to be 450px tall). The simplification uses the actual greatest-common-divisor reduction, not a lookup table of common ratios — so it correctly simplifies dimensions that don't match a standard preset (837×589 reduces to its own exact lowest terms) as well as ones that do. Everything computes instantly in your browser, with a live visual preview box showing the resulting shape at a glance.
When to use it
- →Figuring out what aspect ratio a specific image or video's dimensions actually reduce to
- →Calculating the exact height needed for a fixed-width video embed at a standard ratio like 16:9
- →Resizing an image to a target ratio while preserving its proportions
- →Checking whether two differently-sized images actually share the same aspect ratio
Tips
- ◆The simplified ratio uses true GCD reduction, not a nearest-preset match — an unusual pair of dimensions gets its own exact simplified ratio, not whichever standard ratio happens to be closest.
- ◆Click a preset (16:9, 4:3, 1:1, etc.) to instantly load both the simplify and solve sections with that ratio, ready to adjust.
- ◆The decimal value shown alongside the simplified ratio (e.g. 1.7778 for 16:9) is the same number CSS's aspect-ratio property or an aspect-ratio: 16 / 9 declaration ultimately resolves to.
Frequently asked questions
Why does 1920×1080 simplify to 16:9 specifically?
1920 and 1080 share a greatest common divisor of 120 — dividing both by 120 gives exactly 16 and 9, which can't be reduced any further since 16 and 9 share no common factors other than 1. That's true simplification, the same way a fraction reduces to its lowest terms.
How do I use this to resize an image without distorting it?
Use the 'solve a missing dimension' section: enter the image's current aspect ratio (or simplify its original width/height first to get it), enter your target width or height, and solve for the other dimension. Resizing to those exact calculated dimensions preserves the original proportions exactly.
Why do video platforms care so much about specific ratios like 16:9 or 9:16?
Standard ratios let players, thumbnails, and embed containers size predictably across a platform without letterboxing (black bars) or cropping — 16:9 matches virtually all modern displays and TVs, while 9:16 matches a phone held vertically, which is why it's the standard for Reels/Shorts/TikTok-style vertical video.
