List Sorter & Deduplicator
Sort, dedupe, shuffle, and clean up lists of text lines
About this tool
The List Sorter & Deduplicator takes a block of text lines and cleans it up — sort alphabetically, numerically, or by length; remove exact or case-insensitive duplicates; strip blank lines and leading/trailing whitespace; shuffle into random order; reverse; or number every line — all live as you type or toggle options, with no button clicks required for the core cleanup. It's the kind of small, repetitive text-wrangling task that's easy to do wrong by hand — missing one duplicate because of a trailing space, or losing track of which lines you'd already sorted. This tool applies every enabled operation as one consistent pipeline (trim → remove empty → dedupe → sort → number) so the result is deterministic and easy to reason about.
When to use it
- →Deduplicating a list of email addresses, domains, or IDs pasted from a spreadsheet
- →Alphabetizing an environment variable list, a CSS class list, or an import list before committing
- →Cleaning up a scraped or copy-pasted list that has inconsistent spacing and blank lines
- →Numbering a plain list for use as a checklist or a step-by-step doc
- →Shuffling a list of names or items for a randomized draw or a randomized test dataset
Tips
- ◆Case-sensitive dedupe (the default) treats "Apple" and "apple" as different lines — turn it off if you want them merged.
- ◆Numeric sort falls back to alphabetical for any line that isn't a plain number, so a mixed list still sorts predictably instead of erroring.
- ◆Shuffle and Reverse apply immediately to the input itself (not just the output), so you can keep stacking other operations — like sort — on top of a shuffled result.
Frequently asked questions
Does the numeric sort handle decimals and negative numbers?
Yes — it parses each line as a floating-point number (so "-3.5" and "12" both sort correctly) and falls back to comparing the raw text for any line that isn't a valid number, so those always land in a consistent, predictable position rather than causing an error.
What counts as a duplicate when case-sensitive dedupe is off?
Two lines are considered duplicates if they're identical after lowercasing — so "Apple", "apple", and "APPLE" would all collapse into whichever one appeared first in the list. Turn case-sensitive dedupe on if you need those treated as distinct.
Is my list sent anywhere when I use this tool?
No — all sorting, deduplication, and shuffling happens with plain JavaScript in your browser. Nothing you paste here is ever sent to a server.
